Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass born into slavery became one the most famous and respected African-American in the U.S. history of the nineteenth century.Douglass despised slavery and he was able to escape and find a better life because he knew how to read and write.HE was unlike most slaves because slaves were not allowed to write or anything else that would enable them to become educated.But Douglass got lucky for a while his mistess taught him the letters of the alphabet and thus got the wheels and the desire to learn.He learned through his friends,hiding reading the newspaper and it was his knowledge that freed him.Even though she stopped teaching him,she couldn’t stop him from learning .Douglass insists that education goes hand in hand with freedom.Knowledge is power and the more you have the more powerful you feel not the power that where you feel that you hold people faith your hands,but the power that you can get the job that you want and be the person that you believed God meant’ for you to be.Education gives you since pride in yourself, this is something that you did and the more educated you are the more pride you have in your self and for most the better the quality of life you have.Back when education was so hard to come by,people especially African-American wanted it.There is a world of opportantities today in being or getting educated.Thinking back to a time when i just starting school I remember my grandfather saying now you go to school and just let your brain act like a sponge and you will get everything that the teachers are teaching you.Education has always been essential to me.Douglass set the foundationfor blacks in the artof learnings,and from him our other black founders builded upon,that foundation to free us and education in our path for the taking.Douglass talked about how he regreted his own existence because he was a slave, he wished he would do something for them to kill him,I never experienced slavery but i have known prejudice and the nore knowledge I acquire the less it hurts,because we are no longer ignorant to the unknown,that is how they kept them slaves,because if you don’t know anything, you can’t change anything.That book the Columbian Orator open his eyes and his mind and that is how he was able to bring about change.Knowledge is power,power to make change,change is a way to freedom.

God made all things good, that is a fact that is agreeable. Rousseau talks about how man defaces and corrupts he loves things that are deformed and monstrous, nothing will be as God has made it, not even man. We have three teachers in our education nature, man and things. Our development, the functioning of our organ and mind is from the teacher nature. The men teacher we learn to use this growth, and the what, when, how and where things happen to us are the experiences we go through comes from the teacher things. Now we learn through seeing and doing. The environment in which you are exposed to teaches you the normal for that environment. We learn to hate, to love, to kill and to steal. He talks about how a child’s worth increase through the years the cost of care has to be added to this worth. We must protect them from the ills of youth. We must allow their values to increase until they reach manhood. Our parents have to be in agreement, one can not say yes and the other no, they must be in agreement about all thins that affect the child for if they are not this is detrimental and can cause great confusion for the child. As a child grows he learns about movement, the senses, gains strength, the mind and body are in balance, they are coming into self presentation.

Ruth Benedict believed that your culture provides the ingredients, if you will of which the individual makes his life. If this culture offers little advantages or opportunities, the individual will suffer, but if what the culture has to offer is rich, there are endless opportunities and the individual will benefit from those opportunities. We feed off the culture/society in which we live, but we also return something to it. Benedict saw the law as a mean our traffic laws, it tells us how faster we can drive. Society is not an entity apart from the people it is composed of. We can not reach our potential without the culture in which we participates. We are not machines, we do march to the tune of society. Benedict talks, about homosexuality being held or regarded as exceptionally able, in most of North America, where the are called Berdache by the French From little boys they dressed as women and did the job of women and was respected, but the men that lived with them was ridiculed. Today that is not the fact both of them are ridiculed and stereotyped by the very society that have molded them. These men’s made clothing, did all the duties of women and also hunted for the food. The partner of the man-woman was considered inadequate because he did go outside the house, he didn’t contribute to the household needs, this type of behavior was considered abnormal. Benedict also talked about another abnormal behavior trance when people was taken over by a spirit or something that usual powers to taken over the body and mind of an individual and cause them to do things.

Man’s Nature, good or evil

Mencius and Hsun both makes really good arguments for their position on the inherent nature of Humanity, is it good or is it evil. When a child is born they have no persception of good and evil, the child grows up and goes out into the world, there they find peer pressures, music, television and different other medias glamourizing wrong doings and the people that do these unjust things becoming famous. All these things are contributors to what we do and how we behave? Do the laws that are in place turn us away from evil and to goodness? Not completely, because then we would have to consider why the jails are full. Kao believed that human nature is neither inherently good nor evil, but a blank slate that can be written on and shaped into whatever one desires, that it can be coached and and conditioned into this goodness or evil machine. While all this plays a part in the makeup of Humanity, there is still the issue of free will. We are taught lessons in school and we learn, some more than others, but then it comes to continuing our education or getting a job, lots of time you will find that the ones that did well in school went on to get jobs and not continue with their education. Why? Free will. God gave us free will, so whether you are taught evil or goodness, fed it, or what every form it came in doesn’t mean that that is going to be your nature. We all make conscienous choices everyday, whether it’s for good or evil it is one that is of the individual. We can be put in situations and it’s the conscienous decisions that we make that determines our inherent nature. Parents raises their children and give them certain values and moral standards by which to live, and then those children turns around and do the total opposite of the values and morals that the parents instilled in them. Again a conscienous choice. It doesn’t matter what we have been exposed to, or taught, what has been done to us, the goodness and or evilness of Humanity ultimately depends on the individual.
